This is a new year and I have made several resolutions. One of them is to continue with my 90 days of writing. I love the phrase – “Life gets in the way” which is what happened to me. I am also happy to say that I have completed my first assignment for my writing course. Therefore, I certainly need to keep pressing on.
There is so much happening on a daily basis and I am being approached to work with teens. This I am happy about because we have to invest in the children of today as they are going to be the leaders of tomorrow. There is the belief that we have lost a generation. But I don’t quite see it like that. The children of today are born in a time where technology is advancing at a rapid rate and we cannot treat them the same way we were treated as children which is about 28yrs where I am concerned.
Children need to be treated with respect. Parents have to set the example re how they interact with people on a whole. We have to keep talking to our children especially about choices and consequences for the choices made. During the 1990 revolution in Trinidad, children saw their parents and adults looting and stealing household appliances; jewelery and supplies. This started the break down of respect that children will have towards adults. Their attitude is – how can you tell me it is against the law to steal, when you as my parent, came home with items that you stole from the shops downtown? How am I supposed to respect a teacher when I am present while you abuse a teacher who is trying to correct me? The list goes on and on.
One of my teen client – I have to keep reinforcing the role playing – if you were your mother, would you allow your child too……. the answer always came back as – no I would not allow my child to do…..
Choices vs Consequences – take your pick…. that is my philosophy….
