There are several reasons that victims of abuse stay in abusive relationships:
1) they don’t recognize that they are a victim of abuse, especially when it is verbal abuse
2) lack of finances
3) fear of losing their kids
4) fear of the unknown – of the abuser punishing them
5) propensity to blame and question themselves
6) tendency to be co-dependent
When victims of abuse take action to remove themselves from a relationship/situation, it is always recommended that psychological help be sought to deal with the emotional trauma suffered.
Once emotional health has been achieved, victims of abuse will be able to be coached to magnificent levels by focusing on goals. The focus will be on where the client is right now, where they want to be next and how to get them there.
A coach will help victims of abuse to create an awareness of themselves by getting them to recognize their beliefs, mind, spirit and body. This will support them in identifying the areas of their life that work for them and the ones that don’t. Learning more about oneself is part of growing as a person, else we will stagnate in life.
Benefits to victims of abuse being coached are 1) to encourage more positive things in their lives and 2) to rid themselves of unhelpful behaviours that lead to negative effects. In order for victims of abuse to change unhelpful behaviours they will need some support to actually see these behaviours in action.
One of the most important steps in this process is asking for support. For the support to be successful victims of abuse have to be able to speak their thoughts out loud. This stops the inner discussion that goes on in their minds . As we all know, our inner self talk can be quite critical and because it goes round and round in circles, we can never move forward. Its aim is to question our good intentions. Talking out loud to a coach tells your inner self talk that you are no longer listening to it. A conversation out loud requires a person to speak their intent, to articulate their thoughts and this can be the first step to committing to a new way of doing something and to a new life.
