There is an NLP method known as “Time Distortion” which is used to change one’s relationship with time and to alter one’s conception of time. Richard Bandler in his book “Time For a Change” explains some of the things you can do with your perception of time.
Did you know that you have experienced time distortion all your life. Leaving a fast-moving motorway and driving on a slow road, you suddenly feel like everything is moving super slow. That’s because your brain unconsciously adjusted to the speed you were traveling at. You can make that “speeding up” happen at work, so you get more done!
Bandler suggests that great baseball players use time distortion. He recounts an experience he had with a baseball team whereby he got up at the plate and said to the pitcher, “Throw me some fast balls.” The pitcher said, “I did.” He saw the pitcher’s hand go back. Then he heard the sound of the ball in the catcher’s mitt behind him. Later, Bandler talked with the team’s hitters and found out how they saw the ball. He asked about the difference between a good day and a bad day. It turns out that these guys go into a trance, slow down time and make the ball bigger so as to make hitting a lot easier.
The trance was also used in target shooting. The guys who do great at target shooting hallucinate the target. They move it real close and make it real big. That makes it hard to miss.
It’s a riveting subject, I think you’ll agree. But many people ask whether it is really possible to experience time differently. Below is an exercise that you may want to try.
1) Think of an occasion when time has really dragged. It might be while you were waiting in a queue, watching a dull TV show, or while you talked with an acquaintance who is boring.
2) Think of an occasion when time for you has really flown by. It might have been when you were traveling somewhere you’d never been before, listening to a fascinating individual talking about something you found really useful or when you were learning something new.
Notice the difference you felt, and how much better the second feeling is. So, now you know you really can experience time in a completely different way. It’s just learning how to take control of those differences! Anyone can learn how to take control of those differences!
